The McMurdo is a very nice jacket. I ended up snagging it in the Grey tweed color after I bought and then returned the Gotham in the same color (was not a fan of the fit/number of pockets on the Gotham). I am far happier with the McMurdo. The number is pockets is excellent, although the two upper chest pockets are essentially useless as handwarmer pockets, as they are very small and have zippers on them that dig into your wrist when your hands are in the pockets. The two bottom pockets are far more practical for use as handwarmer pockets, and they are partially lined (on only the front portion of the pocket-not fully lined, for reasons unbeknownst to me) with soft fleece. The only problem with this is that they are fairly low on the coat, and so if you have short arms using them could be problematic.

The sizing on this coat is pretty much spot on. Contrary to what TNF's sizing chart recommended (Medium), I went with my usual size Large after reading others' reviews regarding the sizing (I am 5'9, around 185 lbs with broad shoulders) and the fit is excellent: not too loose, but also not too tight so I still have room for layering on ultra cold days. The coat is fairly long, but that is to be expected when buying a parka like this so the length is just fine. The lack of a two-way zipper had me worried when initially buying the coat, but it hasn't really been a problem; had I purchased the Medium as the site recommended, it might have been too tight around the hips and then I could see the zipper being a problem when kneeling down, getting in the car, etc. Bottom line-go with your usual size on this one, don't listen to people who say it runs gigantic-it doesn't.

The jacket is very warm-I have worn it as far down to 2?F so far (-10F with windchill) with a T-shirt underneath, and it kept me warm. It is not quite as "puffy" as it used to be (I have an older 2002 McMurdo model that definitely has at least a little more down in it) but the warmth feels similar (the older one is probably marginally warmer). But the new version feels less gigantic on your body, and is definitely easier to move around in, so I'm fine with that tradeoff. As far as I can tell so far, the jacket is VERY wind resistant, and as close to windproof as pretty much any jacket I've owned. The waterproof factor is also excellent-water beads right off. The hood keeps your head warm, and although it is detachable (for some reason), it does a good job keeping wind out compared with detachable hoods I've seen on other jackets.

Overall, this jacket is a very good deal. I managed to get it for $230 on one of TNF's authorized online dealer sites, but even for the original price of $330 it's still a lot of jacket for the money

I bought a new McMurdo parka to replace one that I had bought 3 years ago and was severely torn. My old McMurdo parka had a two way zipper to open and close the parka. The new one has only a one way zipper. A parka of this caliber, price and especially coming from The North Face has to have a two way zipper for when you have to kneel down or get in or out of a transport vehicle. The Hyvent material was also thinner than my old McMurdo parka. The thinner material is acceptable if the parka still keeps the heat in and can be considered an improvement. However, the lack of a two way zipper in unforgivable. Raise the price if you have too, but keep the product the same.

Comments about The North Face McMurdo Faux-Fur Hood Waterproof Parka II Coat:

First North Face jacket and I love it. Normally I'm a Medium but had to return the Medium and buy a Small. They tend to run large for men. Overal l like. Would give it a 4.5 if it had that rating but had to dock for pocket locations. as they're a little too high and also not very comfy to leave your hands in when outside on a cold day.

Comments about The North Face McMurdo Faux-Fur Hood Waterproof Parka II Coat:

This parka requires a large heavy duty Zipper set. It is impossible to insert the tiny male part of zipper into
double slider within ten minutes, only after pulling the coat above waist under direct vision. North Face
cut costs, sewed in a zipper which belongs on a light sweater. There is no zip tab to assist inserting the
left side into the sliders which must line up Perfectly before the zipper can close. Closing the snaps first only makes it worse because you cannot see bottom of the zipper. Sleeves do not have snow guards. Coat useless as a substitute for a ski jacket on a very cold day.

Comments about The North Face McMurdo Faux-Fur Hood Waterproof Parka II Coat:

The only people who gave this jacket 5 stars are those who think 0 degrees is cold. I live in Manitoba, Canada. The wind gets in through the hood and there is no powder skirt to keep the wind from sneaking up there as well. The draw cords don't do their job at keeping the wind out. The material wears out fast and it is NOT waterproof! Did I mention the collar feels like it's strangling you!

Sometimes the wind just goes through the slits where your ears at which can get very cold if you forget ear muffs. It's fine if you wear the integrated mask but I don't usually put it on.

This is a wonderful jacket. I live in NYC and it keeps me warm with minimal layers underneath, is extremely well-made. My only complaint is that the zipper is a little small for such a large jacket -- but that's such a minimal issue for a coat as near-perfection as this.

This jacket is extremely warm. I can not reiterate that enough. Totally the best decision I've made this winter season in the Northeast. The one draw back is that I've noticed that across the top of my upper back, in an approximately 2 inch band, I feel markedly cooler in that area compared to the rest of my back. I don't know if this is a design flaw or if the down settled thereby exposing that particular area but it is the lone critique I have.
