My daughter has a very narrow ankle so the strap really helps to keep the shoe in place. She is very hard on shoes so some wear was showing rather quickly (not a fault of the shoe). These are very cute and easy to get on and off for a child (8). We have the pink and are going to try to find them in the cheetah color.
