I bought the rolling thunder specifically for road trips. My girlfriend and I needed a luggage that would hold both of our gear, and normal non outdoor essentials. I have used it for mountain biking (car camping) trips, snowboarding, and a road trip to Riudoso.

It has been carried upstairs with the handles and rolled around on dirt, grass, and puddles of water with no problem. It is reinforced in all of the right places along with not having to much unnecessary material. My girlfriend and I have been able to pack 3 days worth of clothes each along with both of our gear. It arrived within 3 business days!

North Face makes beautiful bags with appealing color schemes and designs. The pockets zip easily and were placed with thought. The two external pockets on the new Rolling Thunder 22 are great for storing books and magazines that you can easily find before putting your bag in the overhead bin. The bags roll smoothly and quietly with their large rubber wheels. The RT 22 has numerous external handles and now includes a strap for attaching a secondary bag. The suitcase fits perfectly in standard sized overhead bins and fits sideways in a regional jet. The upgraded base support over the last iteration (Rolling Thunder size Small) should keep the bottom from crushing down over time and yet still provides just enough storage space for a few days of travel.

My only frustration with this bag is the handle... and it is a major frustration. The first few uses of the handle are always exciting. It extends and stows smoothly with no noticeable wobble and looks like the sturdiest handle on any bag ever made.

I used and warrantied a RT (size small) bag twice with broken handles before upgrading to the new RT 22 with hopes that the "handle issue" had been fixed. With both original handles, the button mechanism snapped and one side of the handle would pull away from the other. This past week, I took my brand new RT 22 on it's first trip. I lightly loaded the bag and babied the handle, thinking to myself "I'm going to make this bag last as long as possible!" The handle worked fine on my first leg of the trip, but wouldn't stow past the half way point by the time I boarded my flight home. In order to restow the handle past the half way point I now have to slam it several times like I'm vigorously pumping a bike tire.

      Bottom line:
Buy this bag if you want a bag that will get complements from random travelers.
Don't buy this bag if you want a bag with a functioning handle.

Comments about The North Face 36" Rolling Thunder Duffel:

Great bag. Tough material, mostly well designed (except see below), rolls well, handle large volume of stuff. Had internal and external compression straps. It's been on several trips (big airports, small planes, etc.), and while it's a bit scuffed up, it's holding up well. HOWEVER, the handle has started to come apart and it no longer locks down in place. Feels like it's about to fail - not trusted for another trip. I'm about to test TNF's lifetime warranty.

On my second trip, the seams were falling apart in two areas. It's a real bummer, cause I loved how it looked and everything about it seemed like a fantastic bag. Didn't hardly last a month without busting. If it was made like the other non-wheeled duffels it'd be good for another 10 years. But nope, returning this.

Comments about The North Face 36" Rolling Thunder Duffel:

I travel all the time living out of hotels sometimes weeks at a time. I'm in construction so the bag takes abuse in the back of the truck. The only complaint I have is the ability to maneuver the bag on the wheels. The design is flawed. The two handles at the top are offset. It doesn't have a additional handle centered so your wheeling the bag off centered and unbalanced. Simple turns become complicated. With the intense capacity of the bag this will become a problem. Hopefully future designs will account for this.

Comments about The North Face 36" Rolling Thunder Duffel:

I travel constantly for work. I only carry-on, although I am required to gate-check my bag occasionally. When a bag fails I throw it out, even if it has a warranty because I can't be without a bag for more than 2-3 days. I've purchased many brands, high-end and value brands.

I originally purchased the 36" roller duffle for a long, gear intensive trip. The bag held 75 lbs of gear and held up better than any other I've ever owned. I was so impressed that I purchased the carry-on version as well. The canvas that the bag is made out of is heavy-duty, it can be dragged across the ground by baggage handlers without wearing through.

The most impressive component of this bag is the telescoping handle. I've had issues with handles, but the one on this bag is strong. I've fully extended the handle and picked my fully loaded bag up using the extended handle and tossed the bag into the trunk of a cab, luggage cart at the airport, valet cart at hotels, etc. I wish TNF would show close-ups of the handle, it's truly impressive.

The bottom line: this is your bag if you want the absolutely very best built carry-on, with no compromises.

Just took this on a three week business trip across Asia covering everything from major cities to back country roads. Loved the durability of my base camp duffel combined with the ease of the roller wheels to make getting around airports, train stations, and hotels a breeze. Compartment organization is simple, functional, and effective, and the volume of this bag was more than enough to accommodate all my needs for the lengthy travel.

Comments about The North Face 36" Rolling Thunder Duffel:

I've had the whole set of this luggage (large and carry-on) and after going through old suitcases every few months, I am running on almost a year strong with this set. It's large open compartment lets me store my clothing and equipment with ease. The clasps outside help tighten the flap down snugly to accomodate the volume of "stuff" packed away. I have yet to fill this over capacity for one of my trips. My only complaint is that the cosmetic plastic covering the main flap is very thin and is scuffed off to reveal the tough nylon underneath that is unscathed from the trauma. Yes, I would buy this again. And again.

The product was great, but a little smaller than advertised due to the handle bars on the back of the inside. Good quality, but the zippers were still a little sticky and a little expensive for the category.
